Fans of slowly descending aliens will be delighted to hear that Space Invaders could be set for the movie treatment.

According to The LA Times, Warner Bros. is in negotiations to buy the rights to the classic videogame from Japanese studio Taito.

If they succeed then Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady - who between them have worked on the likes of Saving Private Ryan, The Day After Tomorrow and Paranormal Activity - will join as producers.

Fans of the 1978 title will know that the game didn't exactly have much story, meaning the filmmakers would have free reign to dream up whatever alien invasion story they liked (although apparently the game was originally inspired by the likes of Star Wars and War of the Worlds).

Other retro game adaptations set up in Hollywood include Missile Command, Asteroids and (potentially) Pac-Man.
